What a wonderful weekend! This year, I had the honor of being the The Great Wellsville Balloon Rally artist. It was an unforgettable experience. I loved walking around my hometown, seeing my art everywhere, (on posters, t-shirts, the balloon rally truck) having people stop me and tell me it’s the best poster they’ve seen in a while… I felt a little like a celebrity. My 15 minutes of small town fame was so much fun and it’s a weekend I will always hold close to my heart.

Strolling around town, I was able to stop in at all my favorite shops and, in my own way, help the local economy. I got to enjoy all the flavors of Wellsville that I miss so dearly and see family and friends, new and old. I had that warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia and got to share it with the ones I love… Elvis and his dog even made an appearance. I have to say, my hometown never looked better.

My children, after many years of attending this event, finally got to experience a hot air balloon ride. If you’ve never been, there is nothing quite like it. They flew low, dipped the basket in the river, floated over the pink house and it’s surrounding neighborhood and eventually landed, funny enough, in the McDonald’s drive thru. Breakfast anyone? With all their cousins chasing the balloon, yelling and waving to them. I’m sure it’s something they will never forget.

I did have to drag three teenagers out of bed at 5:30am. But they promise me it was well worth it.

The culmination of such a wonderful weekend was made even more memorable by a surprise 50th Anniversary Party for my parents. With all their children and their children’s children, and a few surprise out of town relatives, everyone I’m related to was actually under one roof. Food, drink and cake was enjoyed over toasts and a tearjerker video compilation of their lives to date. It was absolutely perfect.

We Hetzel’s may be a small, but we are mighty! Watch out world, the next generation is upon you.

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad.

Artscape

I was o-so-honored to have my work featured on LED Baltimore’s billboard this past weekend at Artscape. Four of my paintings along with 29 other artists all had our 15 seconds of fame as our artwork cycled through advertisements, announcements and social media feeds.

For those of you who don’t know, Artscape is an annual art festival held in the Mount Royal neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. It has become the largest free arts festival in America and I was humbled to be a part of it.

I really wanted to get photos of all of my pieces, but comments like “you’re obsessed” and “can we go now?” echoed from my family. So after torturing them to look at the sky for about an hour we gave up and went grabbed some food, some cocktails and watched Galactic perform. It was a fun weekend filled with art, food, music, sun and family.

It was wonderful! I’m one happy gal!

Of course cupcakes are breakfast food. I already licked the icing off, that clearly makes it a muffin.

Autumn

Autumn… I love everything about it! My favorite thing? Well… that would be sitting in front of a roaring fire in my coziest of clothes under a blanket with my kids watching football. Oh, but then I love picking pumpkins, carving them and roasting the seeds. Oh, also, the falling leaves, the smells, the chill in the air, my birthday, trick-or-treating, my anniversary, apple cider, the day getting darker earlier and earlier, watching my son play hockey, cooking of comfort food… Ok, I can’t pick just one… I love it all! Bring it on Fall!

It’s Tournament Time!

Or in other words, Happy Thanksgiving! To many Thanksgiving means football, food and Christmas shopping, but in my house, it means hockey, and plenty of it. For the past 5 or so years after the turkey and stuffing have been devoured, you can find my family at the rink watching my son in his annual Thanksgiving Weekend Ice Hockey Tournament. Here’s to hoping we do well this year. Go Stars! Gobble gobble.

Art Camp Day 5: Papier Mâché

This was by far the messiest project! After constructing our forms out of food boxes, egg cartons and duct tape we made our paste. One part flour, one part water and a glob or two of Elmer’s glue. This whole process transformed me into a kid again. Dipping strips of paper into that gooey concoction and pasting them onto our creations brought me back to grade school art class. I think I was picking paste out of my hair and off of my arms for the rest of the day. After the Papier Mâché dried we gave our sculptures life with paint. Ella is very happy with her robot, that she has named “Mickey.”

Art Camp Day 1: Candle Making

Ever wonder what you can do with all those broken and barely used old crayons? Recycle them into a candle. We started the day by going on a reconnaissance mission digging through old boxes of art supplies we found a bounty of old Crayola Crayons. We then went through the painstaking process of peeling all the labels off. This took a while, I ruined a nail, and we needed to take a break for food. But after we were finished we sorted them into colors. Illustrated here using my cool iPhone app hipstamatic.

We melted them by color in this candle making machine I have (quite frankly, can’t remember where or when I got it.) We dripped the melted wax into a mold. I stuck the mold into the freezer between color drips. Apparently crayons can stay liquidy for a long time. After a few pours…voila. Instant cool candle. We used every crayon except the gold one, which Ella wanted to keep and not melt down. Today, it was her favorite color.
